C.R. Gillespie – Concentration Patterns (2xLP)
Label: Hidden Harmony
Released: 2020
Country: Estonia
Genre: Ambient/New Age/Minimal
Ambient music strives to induce in its listener a state of absolute serenity. It has been understood as a means of easing anxiety and promoting mindfulness and meditation. However, when it comes to ambient music while we understand much of the effect we understand little of the cause. Canadian producer C.R. Gillespie’s most recent release Concentration Patterns on Hidden Harmony Recording seeks to take a analytical approach toward ambient music. Through utilising analog technology such as reel to reel recorders and 1/4” tape loops C.R. Gillespie creates what he terms ‘aural therapy’. Concentration Patterns is a continuous piece of music which through sustained low frequency sound and repetitive patterns allows its listener to ‘disassociate from their surroundings into the synthetic headspace of the extended piece’. Concentration Patterns is not an album designed to be listened to while traveling, or at work, or anywhere. It is an album designed for ‘deep listening’, that is listening with total concentration, only then can the listener recede into the ‘synthetic headspace’ of the piece and achieve that illusive state of absolute serenity.
