Dijit – Hyperattention: Selected Dijital Works Vol. 1
Genre: Trip Hop/Experimental/Downtempo
Hyperattention - Selected Dijital Works vol 1 is the debut LP from Cairo based downbeat connoisseur Dijit (Hashem L Kelesh). The LP compiles half a decades worth of recordings by Dijit in collaboration with a role call of emerging Egyptian artists including spoken word artist AC Ghazy and singer SD. Hyperattention offers an accessible introduction into Cairo’s contemporary scene of slow smoky trip hop beats and sombre vocals. Kelesh’s website states that he creates ‘illusions of sound and image that, much to his surprise, appeal to some people’. Kelesh need not be surprised that Hyperattention appeals to all those disillusioned with contemporary society, not only in Cairo but in cities around the world. Even for the non Egyptian speaker the despondent and detached tone in the words of AC Ghazy is clear. Despite it’s strung-out sound there is nothing half-cut about the production on Dijit’s debut which is intricate and detailed, the influence of Aphex Twin to whom the title pays tribute is indisputable. Hyperattention is an intriguing introduction into the music of Dijit and his collaborators who constitute some of the most innovative artists making music in the Middle East today.
