Sleeping Desiress – Exile House (LP)
Label: OnderStroom Records
Genre: New Wave/Dark Wave/Synth Pop
Exile House is the second release from Californian darkwave dream weaver Gabriel Ramos. The record is a rare original release on Belgian cult reissue label Onderstroom. Exile House is an atmospheric and melancholic dark wave album that musically sits somewhere between The Cure and John Maus. As is often the case with Onderstroom releases Exile House incorporates darkwave, post-punk and synth into a record that resembles an early 4AD release. The first track on the album ‘Angeline’, a sort of forlorn love song, sees some definite folk influences while the second track ‘Black Maria’ is straight post-punk. There are shades of light amongst the dark and this record sees a definite retreat from what Ramos calls the ‘insincere goth posturing’ of his previous release. The songs on Ramos’ most recent release are deeply honest, they don't succumb to the lyrical cliches of dark wave tradition, there are in Ramos’ words ‘no more fogs and darkness, no more shadows’. Instead Exile House explores the sense of isolation and confusion induced through an increasingly incomprehensible world.
